Abstract

The ability to read, or literacy, is essential in the era of the 4.0 revolution to adapt to the rapidly changing environment. The initial reading skills of first-grade students are still low due to a lack of student motivation, limited teaching materials, ineffective reading instruction methods, insufficient parental attention, and the attitude of teachers in assisting students with beginning reading. Therefore, this study aims to describe the implementation of ABC teaching materials using the Iqro’ method in the initial reading skills of first-grade students at SDN Sugihwaras 01. The determination of the sample subjects used purposive sampling techniques, selecting 5 students with reading difficulties from a total of 22 students in the first grade at SDN Sugihwaras 01 in Madiun Regency, East Java, Indonesia. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data sources were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, as well as information collected related to the implementation process. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of ABC teaching materials using the Iqro’ method in the initial reading skills of students includes: the reading level conditions of students in the first grade at SDN Sugihwaras 01, which categorize students into fluent readers and those with reading difficulties; the planning of the implementation of ABC teaching materials with the Iqro’ method, which shows the preparation and planning of the research; the execution of the implementation of ABC teaching materials with the Iqro’ method, which is divided into two stages: the implementation stage involving all first-grade students and the intensive guidance stage for students with reading difficulties; and the evaluation of the implementation of ABC teaching materials with the Iqro’ method, which encompasses the improvement in the initial reading skills of students and the sustainability of the implementation of ABC teaching materials with the Iqro’ method. Therefore, there is a need for attention from the school and parents to participate in enhancing the initial reading skills of students.
