Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the phonics method assisted by word cards on the early reading skills of first-grade elementary school students in Indonesian. The research method used by the researcher is a Quasi-Experimental Design with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population in this study is all first-grade students at MIT Amaanatul Ummah. The sample taken was first grade (As-Salam) as the experimental class using the phonics method assisted by word cards and first grade (Ar-Rohman) as the control class using the lecture method assisted by conventional media with a total of 37 students. Data collection techniques were carried out through reading skill tests and documentation. Data analysis techniques used the Independent Sample T-Test. The analysis results from the reading test yielded a calculated t-value of 3.288 > t-table 2,030. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, indicating that the phonics method assisted by word cards has an effect on the early reading skills of first-grade elementary school students in Indonesian.
