Abstract

Writing is one of the four language skills in English that is important to master. However, mastering writing is not easy for students, especially high school juniors. Therefore, several methods and techniques for teaching writing have been developed by many researchers to help students overcome difficulties in writing. This research analyzes the effects of using collaborative method in teaching descriptive text writing. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of the Collaborative Writing method on students' writing abilities. The research method used in this research is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design. The population in this study consisted of the seventh grade students, SMPN 03 MAOSPATI, especially class A and class B. The results of the research showed that the Collaborative Writing method had a positive effect on students' writing abilities. This is evidenced by the higher average writing post-test score in the experimental group (83.11) compared to the control group (79.37). Data analysis shows that there is a significant difference (sig.2-tailed = 0.004 < 0.05) so that the alternative hypothesis (H¹) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It was concluded that there was a statistically significant difference in students' writing scores between classes taught using the Collaborative Writing method and classes using conventional teaching methods. The Collaborative Writing method also helps students learn English, provide meaning, and be more active in class activities. Students have more freedom to discuss topics, which helps them express themselves better in their writing. These results support the adoption of Collaborative Writing strategies in English language teaching to better support student learning and development.
