Abstract

This study was motivated by the low levels of speaking skills and critical thinking abilities among elementary school students. These problems are primarily attributed to teacher-centered instructional practices, the limited use of innovative learning materials, and the underutilization of instructional media during the learning process. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop a valid, practical, and effective Think-Pair-Share (TPS) learning package assisted by audio-visual media; (2) determine the feasibility of the developed learning package; and (3) examine its effectiveness in improving students' speaking skills and critical thinking abilities. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE instructional design model, which consists of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The products developed in this study included a teaching module, teaching materials, student worksheets (LKPD), audio-visual learning media, speaking skills assessment instruments, critical thinking assessment instruments, and learning assessment tools. The field trial involved 30 fifth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, classroom observation sheets, speaking skills tests, and critical thinking tests. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings indicate that the developed learning package met the criteria of being highly valid, with validation scores of 96.43% from the subject matter expert, 95.12% from the media expert, and 97.05% from the instructional design expert. The effectiveness test also revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills, as reflected by an increase in the mean score from 63.27 on the pre-test to 86.53 on the post-test, with an N-Gain score of 0.73, which falls into the high category. Similarly, students' critical thinking skills improved from a mean pre-test score of 61.80 to a post-test score of 84.97, resulting in an N-Gain score of 0.71, also categorized as high. These findings demonstrate that the Think-Pair-Share learning package assisted by audio-visual media is valid, practical, and effective. Therefore, it can be recommended as an innovative instructional alternative for enhancing elementary school students' speaking skills and critical thinking abilities.
