Abstract
This study aims to describe and explain (1) the implementation of serial picture media in descriptive text writing instruction for fifth-grade students of SD Negeri Banyuarang, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency, and (2) the improvement of students’ descriptive text writing skills through the implementation of serial picture media. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 23 fifth-grade students of SD Negeri Banyuarang, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. Data were collected through descriptive text writing skill tests, observations of teacher and student activities, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that (1) the implementation of serial picture media in descriptive text writing instruction for fifth-grade students of SD Negeri Banyuarang was carried out effectively through picture observation activities, group discussions, organizing observation results, and writing descriptive texts. In Cycle II, the action was improved through more intensive teacher guidance, the use of descriptive text examples, and the addition of vocabulary banks in group worksheets. (2) The implementation of serial picture media improved students’ descriptive text writing skills. This improvement was indicated by the increase in students’ average scores from the pre-cycle stage, which was 61.96 with a classical mastery level of 30.43%, to 76.52 with a classical mastery level of 65.22% in Cycle I, and further increased to 84.78 with a classical mastery level of 86.96% in Cycle II. Based on these findings, the implementation of serial picture media can be considered effective in improving descriptive text writing skills among fifth-grade students of SD Negeri Banyuarang, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency.
