Abstract

This study aims to determine the safe space factor in the use of a second Instagram account, the psychological health of its users, and the impact of self-disclosure on social media on students' real-life interactions. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. Primary data sources were obtained through structured interviews with five students from Universitas PGRI Madiun who actively use a second Instagram account. The results show that the second account functions as a digital safe space (backstage) that provides freedom of expression without aesthetic demands or anxiety about public judgment (frontstage). This safe space is created by limiting the audience to only trusted close friends, although its dynamic nature and sometimes requires additional protection such as the close friend feature. Psychologically, the second account has a positive impact as a means of emotional outlets, mood recovery (resilience), and role stress relief. Intensive use of the second account has been shown not to disrupt the subjects' real-life social interactions, but rather serves as a digital adaptation tool that supports students' emotional well-being in facing daily challenges.
