Abstract
This study was motivated by the low problem-solving skills of fifth-grade students at SDN Jiwan 01 in Madiun Regency in solving word problems on the area of two-dimensional shapes, as evidenced by the fact that the scores on daily quizzes for most students remained below the Minimum Passing Criteria (KKM); only 6 out of 26 students were deemed to have met the criteria. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach based on joyful learning on the problem-solving skills of fifth-grade elementary school students. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design in the form of a one-group pretest-posttest design. The data sources were 26 fifth-grade students at SDN Jiwan 01, selected through saturation sampling. Data were collected through problem-solving word problems administered during the pretest and posttest phases. Data analysis utilized the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Paired Sample t-test for hypothesis testing. The results showed that the mean pretest score of 40.37 increased to 82.16 on the posttest. The results of the hypothesis test showed that the calculated t-value of 13.71 was greater than the critical tvalue of 1.706 at a significance level of 0.05; therefore, H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the RME approach based on joyful learning is effective in enhancing the problem solving skills of fifth-grade elementary school students in solving math word problems
