Abstract
SDN Jiwan 01 Madiun Regency is one of the Elementary Schools that still faces problems related to students’ low numeracy skills, particularly in solving word problems on whole number topics. Based on observations and pre-test results, most students scored below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) because they experienced difficulties in understanding problem information, determining appropriate solution strategies, and interpreting answers correctly. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Polya problem-solving model on students’ numeracy skills in solving word problems among fifth-grade students at SDN Jiwan 01 Madiun Regency. This study employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The population consisted of all fifth-grade students at SDN Jiwan 01 Madiun Regency, totaling 26 students. The sampling technique used was total sampling, in which the entire population was selected as the research sample. Data were collected through numeracy skill tests in the form of essay questions administered before and after the treatment. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Paired Sample t-Test. The results showed that the mean pre-test score of 56.12 increased to 89.65 in the post-test. The hypothesis test revealed that the calculated tvalue (10.554) was greater than the ttable value (1.706), indicating that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. These findings demonstrate that the Polya problem-solving model had a significant effect on students’ numeracy skills. In conclusion, the implementation of the Polya problem-solving model was effective in improving fifth-grade students’ numeracy skills in solving word problems on whole number material. This model can be used as an alternative learning approach to help students think systematically, logically, and reflectively when solving mathematical problems.
