Abstract
The problem of glossophobia or public speaking anxiety experienced by students is shown through behaviors such as looking down when asked to speak, nervousness when having to present, and avoiding opportunities to express opinions in class. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services with role-play techniques in reducing glossophobia or public speaking anxiety in eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Madiun. Glossophobia is a form of social anxiety that negatively impacts students' self-confidence, communication skills, and academic achievement. Symptoms of glossophobia can include physiological aspects such as trembling, rapid heartbeat, psychological aspects such as fear of embarrassment, and behaviors such as avoiding public speaking. The research method used was a quantitative experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 8 students selected through purposive sampling technique based on the results of the initial assessment. The instrument used was a glossophobia questionnaire consisting of physiological, psychological, and behavioral indicators. After providing treatment in the form of group counseling services with role-play techniques for three meetings, the data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a decrease in the level of glossophobia after the intervention. Based on statistical tests, the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.012 <0.05, which indicates that the hypothesis is accepted. This means that group counseling services with role-play techniques are effective in reducing glossophobia in students. The conclusion of this study is that the implementation of group counseling services using role-play techniques has proven effective in helping students overcome public speaking anxiety. This technique provides a safe space for students to practice communication skills through simulated real-life situations, builds self-confidence, and encourages a shift in mindset to a more rational one.
