Abstract

In elementary schools, Social Studies (IPS) plays an important role, not only instilling knowledge about social, economic, cultural, and historical life, but also fostering nationalism and critical thinking skills in understanding social events in the surrounding environment. However, IPS learning is still delivered conventionally and by rote. Students are passive, when given analytical questions, have difficulty explaining the cause and effect of an event, and concluding the material. This indicates that students' critical thinking skills are still low, as are their learning outcomes. The learning outcomes of sixth-grade students in IPS subjects show that 75% of students are below the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). The SCPB (National Heroes Smart Card) media in IPS learning improves critical thinking skills and student learning outcomes. This is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) carried out in two cycles, consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 27 sixth-grade students at SDN 01 Nambangan Lor in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through critical thingking observation sheets and evaluation tests at the end of learning, then analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Critical thinking was analyzed using a Likert scale checklist instrument, learning outcomes were analyzed based on the class average score. The results showed that students' critical thinking skills increased from 55% (low) in the pre-cycle, to 82% (high) in Cycle II. Learning outcomes also increased, from 25% in the pre-cycle to 41% in Cycle I, then to 93% in Cycle II. These results indicate that social studies learning using SCPB effectively increases critical thingking and learning outcomes in the social studies program. This study recommends that teachers use SCPB media as a variation in teaching strategies to create a more interactive and meaningful learning environment.
