Abstract
Writing skill is one of the essential language skills that students need to master. In Indonesian language learning, writing skills can be developed through the use of engaging instructional media that align with technological advancements. This study aims to describe the planning, implementation, learning outcomes, and challenges in the use of news videos and Canva as instructional media to improve the explanatory text writing skills of Grade IX students at SMP Negeri 2 Maospati, Magetan Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The research data were obtained from one Indonesian language teacher as the informant and 27 students of Class IX B at SMP Negeri 2 Maospati as the research subjects. The research instruments included the informant and research subjects, teaching and learning activities, and documents. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data validity was ensured using source triangulation. The data analysis techniques consisted of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings indicate that the lesson planning stage began with the preparation of teaching modules that were tailored to the learning objectives, students' characteristics, and the use of news videos and Canva as instructional media. During the implementation stage, students actively participated in learning explanatory texts, positive interactions were established between the teacher and students, and students responded favorably to the use of news videos and Canva. However, several students encountered difficulties in using Canva because they had never used the application before. Overall, the use of news videos and Canva successfully improved the quality of explanatory text learning through technology-based instructional media. The students' learning outcomes were also categorized as good, as reflected by the average score of 85,93 on the Student Worksheet.
