Abstract

The reading learning process for first-grade elementary school students requires interactive innovations to prevent it from becoming monotonous and boring. The use of digital media is considered capable of optimizing and fostering students’ interest in reading from an early age, particularly in terms of fluent reading among first-grade elementary school students. There is a need to integrate a structured learning model with digital media to facilitate students’ letter recognition, pronunciation, and intonation in fluent reading. This study aims to determine the differences in the use of the SQ3R learning model with Flipbook and BookWidgets learning media on the fluent reading ability of first-grade elementary school students. This study was conducted at SDN Wayut 03 and SDN Jiwan 01 in Jiwan Subdistrict during the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The research method used was quantitative with a comparative design. The research subjects were first-grade elementary school students who participated in Indonesian language lessons using the SQ3R model with Flipbook and BookWidgets as learning media. Data were collected through a fluent reading test that assessed students’ ability to read paragraphs with appropriate intonation and expression, as well as their comprehension of the text. Before testing the hypotheses, the test data were first subjected to a Shapiro-Wilk normality test to ensure they followed a normal distribution. The results of the normality test indicate that the data are normally distributed. Furthermore, the results of the hypothesis test using an independent samples t-test with SPSS 25 show a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.543, which is greater than the specified significance level (0.543 > 0.05); therefore, H0 is accepted. The results of the study indicate that there is no difference in fluent reading ability between students who learned using the Flipbook medium (mean score of 15.55) and those who learned using the BookWidgets medium (mean score of 15.63). The scientific novelty of this study points to a new direction: the digital media Flipbook and BookWidgets offer distinct visual advantages. Thus, the SQ3R learning model combined with the Flipbook and BookWidgets learning media can serve as an effective alternative for improving the fluent reading skills of first-grade elementary school students.
