Abstract
This study aims to (1) describe the application of the communicative approach and picture media in learning to speak of SD Negeri Bukur 02 Madiun Regency students in terms of speaking skills, (2) describe the obstacles faced in the application of the communicative approach and picture media in learning to speak of SD Negeri Bukur 02 Madiun Regency students. This research used case study qualitative research method. The informants in this study were the class teacher and several class students who had participated in learning activities using the communicative approach. The results of this study found several important findings, including (1) Although the communicative approach and the use of picture media can encourage interaction and communication, there is a need for a more differentiated approach to support students with lower speaking skills, (2) The obstacles that arose during the implementation of the communicative approach and the use of picture media included the varying levels of student motivation, limited learning time, differences in speaking ability among students, and lack of training for teachers.
