Abstract
This research is based on the importance of emotional development in early childhood and the changing parenting patterns within families led by a single father. Emotional development in children is influenced by the environment, developmental issues, and the child’s conditions. This study aims to examine the emotional development of children aged 5–6 years who are cared for by their father as a single parent in Jiwan District, Madiun Regency. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects are children aged 5–6 years who live with and are cared for by their father as a single parent. Data collection techniques include observation and semi structured interviews. The validity of the data is ensured through source triangulation, involving the child, the single father, and the homeroom teacher. The results show that children cared for by their father as a single parent are able to demonstrate fairly good emotional development. This is indicated by their ability to recognize and express emotions, regulate emotions appropriately, show independence, and interact socially with their surrounding environment. The parenting style implemented by the father tends to be democratic and full of responsibility, even though he faces limitations in time and has multiple roles. The conclusion of this study is that the father’s active involvement in parenting plays an important role in supporting the emotional development of children aged 5–6 years.
