Abstract

Hadi Purwanto. 2026. Improving Modern Poetry Writing Skills through a Contextual Approach Assisted by Natural Media for Fifth-Grade Students of SD Negeri Rejoagung 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. Master's Thesis. Master's Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dr. Panji Kuncoro Hadi, S.S., M.Pd.; (II) Dr. Yoga Ardian Feriandi, M.Pd. Keywords: writing skills, modern poetry, contextual approach, natural media This study was motivated by the low level of modern poetry writing skills among fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Rejoagung 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. The students experienced difficulties in generating ideas, choosing appropriate words, developing imagination, and writing poetry effectively. Therefore, this study aimed to improve students' modern poetry writing skills through a contextual approach assisted by natural media. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was conducted in two cycles involving 22 fifth-grade students, consisting of 13 boys and 9 girls. Data were collected through observation, writing tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The results showed that the contextual approach assisted by natural media successfully improved the students' modern poetry writing skills. The average score increased from 66.5 in the preliminary condition to 74.2 in Cycle I and 84.6 in Cycle II. The percentage of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion also increased from 31.8% to 59.1%, and finally reached 86.4% in Cycle II. In addition, the students demonstrated better ability in generating ideas, selecting appropriate diction, using imagery, and writing poetry more creatively. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the contextual approach assisted by natural media is effective in improving the modern poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Rejoagung 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. This approach can be used as an alternative strategy for Indonesian language learning that is more active, creative, and meaningful.
