Abstract
ABSTRACT Khristika Ayu Suryani. 2026. Improving Descriptive Writing Skills Through Textless Comic Media for Fifth Grade Students of Kertorejo State Elementary School, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. Theses. Indonesian Master of Language and Literature Education Study Program, Post Graduate Program, Universitas PGRI Madiun, Advisor I) Dr. Panji Kuncoro Hadi, S.S., M.Pd.; (II) Dr. Aris Wuryantoro, S.S, M.Hum. Keywords: writing, description, learning media, and comics without text This study aims to describe and explain (1) the application of wordless comic media can improve the descriptive writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency; (2) changes in the behavior of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency, after participating in descriptive writing lessons using wordless comic media; and (3) the obstacles faced and solutions found by fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency, during descriptive writing lessons using wordless comic media. This study is a classroom action research project conducted over two cycles. The study concludes that (1) the application of wordless comic media can improve the descriptive writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency. This is evidenced by the results of Cycle I, which yielded an average score of 70.78, whereas Cycle II yielded a class average score of 82.61, representing an increase of 16.71% from Cycle I to Cycle II. (2) The behavior of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2, Ngoro District, Jombang Regency, changed after participating in descriptive writing lessons using wordless comic media. These behavioral changes are evidenced by non-test data, including observations, journals, and interviews. Changes in student behavior were clearly visible during the lessons; based on non-test data from Cycle I, negative student behaviors were still apparent during instruction, whereas in Cycle II, negative behaviors decreased while positive behaviors increased. (3) Descriptive writing instruction for fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kertorejo 2 initially faced obstacles—specifically, low writing ability and motivation—stemming from a one-way (lecture-style) teaching method, a lack of practice, and students' difficulties in generating ideas, structuring descriptions, and applying correct spelling and punctuation rules. As a solution, the researcher employed wordless comics combined with a guided writing technique.
