Abstract
This research is motivated by the persistent low reading comprehension skills of sixth-grade elementary students, characterized by difficulties in grasping main ideas, making inferences, and understanding implied meanings in texts. Reading instruction that has so far relied heavily on textbooks and worksheets tends to be less engaging, resulting in limited student motivation and participation during reading activities. Canva-based digital comic media offers an innovative alternative by combining text, images, colors, and storylines in an appealing visual format, which is expected to facilitate deeper and more enjoyable reading comprehension. The objectives of this study are to describe the use of Canva-based digital comic media in reading comprehension instruction and to analyze its impact on students’ reading comprehension abilities. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were teachers and sixth-grade students of SD Negeri 3 Puyung. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, reading comprehension tests, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the use of Canva-based digital comics significantly improves students' reading comprehension skills. Visual elements in the comics help students build mental representations of the text content, making it easier for them to identify characters, settings, plots, and relationships between concepts. In addition, students show increased motivation, active questioning, and the ability to retell the content of the reading more coherently. Teachers find it easier to deliver materials because students are more enthusiastic and actively engaged in the learning process. In conclusion, Canva-based digital comic media is effectively used to enhance reading comprehension skills of sixth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Puyung and is recommended as a supporting medium for Indonesian language learning in elementary schools.
