Abstract

This study aims to improve the social literacy skills of sixth-grade elementary school students through the implementation of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model with the assistance of audio-visual media. The background of this study is the low level of social literacy in students, characterized by a lack of sensitivity to social issues around them and minimal initiative in collaborating to solve social problems. Furthermore, monotonous and uninnovative learning is one contributing factor. This study is a classroom action research conducted in two cycles. The subjects were 15 sixth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, social literacy skills tests, and documentation. The instruments used included teacher and student activity observation sheets, interview guidelines, test questions, and a project product assessment rubric. The results showed a significant improvement in students' social literacy skills. In Cycle I, the average social literacy test scores were still in the adequate category, with some students not actively participating in group discussions. However, after corrective actions were implemented in Cycle II, the average scores increased sharply, reaching the good and excellent categories. The use of audiovisual media in the form of documentary videos or social campaigns has proven effective in stimulating empathy, increasing students' understanding of social issues, and motivating them to actively participate in projects. The resulting project products, such as social campaign videos, demonstrate improved students' abilities to collaborate, communicate, and think critically to find solutions to social problems in their environment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) learning model with the aid of audiovisual media is effective in improving the social literacy skills of sixth-grade students. This model creates meaningful and contextual learning experiences, enabling students not only to understand concepts but also to apply them in real-world situations.
