Abstract

This study aims to describe and explain (1) the application of a contextual approach assisted by natural environment media in learning to write descriptions of fifth grade students of Penggaron State Elementary School, Mojowarno District, Jombang Regency and (2) the activities of fifth grade students of Penggaron State Elementary School, Mojowarno District, Jombang Regency in participating in learning to write descriptions through a contextual approach assisted by natural environment media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the average value of students is 61.97 with a sufficient category. The average value after the first cycle of action is 74.08 with a sufficient category. The average value of students after the second cycle of action is 82.50 with a good category, and (2) students' activities towards natural environment media as one way of learning to write descriptions are very positive. Based on the results of interviews in the first cycle, on average they responded positively to the learning that has been delivered by the teacher. In addition, based on the results of observations in cycle I, 75% of the total number of students paid close attention to the teacher's explanation during the learning process. Even in cycle II, 90% of students liked the material and really liked learning with natural media. Likewise, with student activity, in cycle I, 25% of students were inactive, but in cycle II, the number of inactive students decreased to 10% or around 4 students.
