Abstract

Adib Jion Satriyo. 2026. *Improving Free-Verse Poetry Writing Skills through a Contextual Approach Assisted by the Surrounding Natural Environment Media among Fifth-Grade Students of SD Negeri 2 Wonosalam, Wonosalam District, Jombang Regency*. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun. This study aimed to describe the implementation of a contextual approach assisted by the surrounding natural environment media in improving the free-verse poetry writing skills of fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Wonosalam, Wonosalam District, Jombang Regency, as well as to describe the students’ activities during the learning process. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, implementation of action, observation, and reflection. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and free-verse poetry writing tests. The data were analyzed descriptively by comparing the students’ learning outcomes and activities before and after the implementation of the learning approach. The results showed that the students’ free-verse poetry writing skills improved after the implementation of the contextual approach assisted by the surrounding natural environment media. The average score increased from 61.97 in the preliminary condition to 74.08 in Cycle I and further increased to 81.80 in Cycle II. The students’ learning activities also improved during the learning process. In Cycle I, 75% of the students demonstrated attentive participation, while in Cycle II, 90% of the students expressed positive responses toward learning activities using the surrounding natural environment as learning media. Meanwhile, the proportion of inactive students decreased from 25% in Cycle I to 10% in Cycle II. The interview results also indicated positive responses from the students toward the learning activities. Based on these findings, the implementation of a contextual approach assisted by the surrounding natural environment media can improve fifth-grade students’ free-verse poetry writing skills and learning activities. The surrounding natural environment provides students with concrete and meaningful learning experiences that help them develop ideas, observations, imagination, and creativity in writing free-verse poetry. **Keywords:** writing, free-verse poetry, contextual approach, surrounding natural environment.
