Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Montessori approach in Indonesian language instruction, the development of students' early writing skills, the supporting and inhibiting factors, and student responses to the Montessori approach in the first-grade class at SDN Kleco, Bendo District, Magetan Regency. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data validity was verified using source, technique, and document triangulation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the Montessori approach—utilizing materials such as sandpaper letters and the movable alphabet—fosters active, enjoyable, and student-centered learning. This approach aids in developing early writing skills, enhancing letter recognition and simple word writing abilities, and boosting students' concentration, independence, and self-confidence. Supporting factors include the availability of materials, the teacher's role, and student enthusiasm, while inhibiting factors include limited materials, variations in student ability, and time constraints. Student responses to the Montessori approach were highly positive, as the learning process became more engaging and motivated them to learn to write. Thus, the Montessori approach is effective for developing early writing skills among first-grade elementary school students.
