Abstract

This research on gender performativity in Andrei Aksana's novel Lelaki Terindah (2004) is motivated by the stigma in society against men with nonmasculine appearances, which are considered a form of social deviation. Through cultural developments that continue to change over time, it is important to provide a new understanding to society regarding the concept of masculinity and queer identity. The actions of male characters in the text are linked to the formation of their gender identity. This research focuses on (1) describing the forms of gender performativity of male characters in Andrei Aksana's novel Lelaki Terindah, and (2) explaining the reasons why the gender performativity of male characters in the novel Lelaki Terindah is questioned by the social environment. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a gender studies approach. Data in the form of text excerpts were obtained through a note-taking technique, then grouped in a classification table based on visual aspects, language, behavior, social expectations, and social reactions. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using a descriptive content analysis method. The results of the study show (1) the existence of two gender expressions that display masculine expressions, but there are also subversive actions carried out to reveal their sexual identity as homosexuals. (2) Rejection by society occurs because of a clash between the social expectations formed towards the character and the truth of the subversive sexual identity that the character expresses.
