Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms and strategies of commissive speech acts in the live streaming of the TikTok account Batik Sanarakarta. Through a pragmatic approach, this study specifically examines the application of Austin and Searle's commissive speech act theories to digital buying and selling interactions. The main focus is to dissect how the utterances used by the hosts bind the sellers while simultaneously influencing the actions of potential buyers during the live stream. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The research data consists of the host's utterances during the live streaming of the TikTok account Batik Sanarakarta that contain commissive speech acts. Data collection was carried out by applying listening, recording, and note-taking techniques to the live stream activities. After the data was collected, the analysis process was conducted using Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis model, which includes three main stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that six forms of commissive speech acts were found: promising, offering, expressing capability, threatening, refusing, and guaranteeing, with offering being the most dominant form. Regarding speech strategies, both direct and indirect strategies were identified, with the direct strategy in the form of imperative sentences being the most dominant. These findings prove that hosts tend to use clear, assertive, and instant utterances in offering products to the audience to expedite purchasing decisions during the live stream.
