Abstract
Mathematical literacy is an essential competency that enables students to understand and apply mathematical concepts to solve real-life problems. However, elementary students' mathematical literacy remains low because learning tends to emphasize procedures rather than the application of concepts in real contexts. This study aimed to determine the differences in students' mathematical literacy between those taught using the PAIKEM approach and those taught using the PMRI approach within the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a Posttest-Only Nonequivalent Group Design. The sample consisted of 20 students in the first experimental group (PAIKEM) and 23 students in the second experimental group (PMRI). Data were collected through tests and documentation and analyzed using normality, homogeneity, and Independent Samples t-test. The results showed that the mean mathematical literacy score of the PAIKEM group was 67.50, while that of the PMRI group was 75.87. The significance value of 0.008 (<0.05) indicated a significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, the PMRI approach within the CTL model was more effective than the PAIKEM approach in improving the mathematical literacy of fourth-grade elementary school students.
