Abstract

Nita Ayu Saputri. 2026. The Application of the RME Approach Using the “Papan Jurang” Concrete Media to Improve the Numeracy Skills of First-Grade Elementary School Students. Thesis, Elementary School Teacher Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dr. Hendra Erik Rudyanto, M.Pd.; (II) Melik Budiarti, S.Sos., MA. Mathematics plays a crucial role in developing students’ numeracy skills starting in elementary school, serving as the foundation for understanding various mathematical concepts. However, observations at SDN Dimong 03 in Madiun Regency indicate that first-grade students’ numeracy skills remain low. This low level of numeracy is attributed to teaching methods that are still teacher-centered, a lack of student motivation, and the suboptimal use of concrete and engaging learning materials. This study aimed to improve first-grade students’ numeracy skills through the implementation of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach using a concrete teaching aid called the “papan jurang.” The study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which was conducted in two cycles. Data were collected through direct observation, evaluation tests (at the end of each cycle), and documentation, and were then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings revealed that the implementation of the RME approach, supported by the use of the “gap board” as a concrete teaching aid, improved students’ numeracy skills. The percentage of students achieving the minimum learning mastery increased from 31% in the pre-cycle stage to 69% in Cycle I and reached 92% in Cycle II. In addition, students’ learning activities also improved, as evidenced by increased participation, enthusiasm, and engagement during the learning process. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach, supported by the concrete “gap board” teaching aid, was effective in improving the numeracy skills of first-grade students at SDN Dimong 03 in Madiun Regency. Therefore, schools are expected to continue supporting and facilitating the use of innovative concrete teaching aids to enhance the quality of learning.
