Abstract
ABSTRACT Nia Uswatun Khasanah. 2026. An Analysis of Students' Reading Fluency Skills (A Case Study of Fourth Grade Students at SDN Jiwan 01). Thesis. Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisor (I) Dr. Dewi Tryanasari, S.Pd., M.Pd. Advisor (II) Dr. Sri Lestari, M.Pd. This study was motivated by the fact that several fourth-grade students at SDN Jiwan 01 still experienced difficulties in reading fluency skills. The difficulties were reflected in reading accuracy, reading speed, prosody, and reading smoothness. This study aimed to describe students’ reading fluency skills, identify the factors causing reading difficulties, and explain the teacher’s efforts to overcome these difficulties. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data sources consisted of fourth-grade students, the fourth-grade teacher, and students’ parents. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results showed that students still experienced difficulties in reading accuracy, reading speed, prosody, and reading fluency. The factors causing reading difficulties included internal factors such as low reading interest and motivation, limited phonological skills, lack of concentration, and low self-confidence. External factors included limited family support, school environment factors, and peer influence. Teachers’ efforts to address reading difficulties included providing reading assistance, implementing repeated reading exercises, using engaging learning media, and collaborating with parents. These efforts helped improve students’ reading skills gradually. Keywords: reading fluency skills, reading difficulties, teacher efforts, case study.
