Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the application of picture word card media can improve the beginning reading skills of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kedungpadang, Rejoso District, Nganjuk Regency and (2) the learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kedungpadang, Rejoso District, Nganjuk Regency in learning to read beginning using picture word card media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the application of picture word card media can improve the beginning reading skills of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kedungpadang, Rejoso District, Nganjuk Regency. In cycle I, the average score of students was 76.14 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the moderate category and the average score of cycle II increased to 86.70 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the good category. This means that there is an increase in the beginning reading skills with the application of picture word card media in second-grade students, and (2) Increase the learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kedungpadang, Rejoso District, Nganjuk Regency in learning to read beginning using picture word cards media have increased. This is proven in the first cycle, there were 17 students (62%) who completed the beginning reading using picture word cards media in class II and in the second cycle, there were 23 students (85%) who completed understanding the ability to read beginning with the application of picture word cards media in class II students.
