Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Mabung through the implementation of the Discovery Learning method supported by digital comic media. The background of this study is based on the low level of students’ reading comprehension skills, as indicated by difficulties in identifying main ideas, understanding the content of reading texts, and low reading interest due to the use of less engaging learning media. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 28 fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Mabung. Data collection techniques included reading comprehension tests, observations, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study indicate that the application of the Discovery Learning method using digital comic media can significantly improve students’ reading comprehension skills. The students’ average scores and the percentage of learning mastery increased from the pre-action stage to Cycle I and Cycle II. In addition, student activity and engagement in learning also improved, as shown by students’ enthusiasm in reading, discussing, and summarizing the content of the texts. Digital comic media proved to be effective in attracting students’ interest and helping them understand the text content through engaging visual displays. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Discovery Learning method supported by digital comic media is effective in improving the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade elementary school students.
