Abstract

This study aims to improve the early reading skills of elementary school students through the application of the Structural Analytical Synthetic (SAS) method assisted by picture word card media. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were 12 first grade students. Data were collected through early reading ability tests, observation sheets of teacher and student activities, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results show a significant improvement in students’ early reading skills. In the pre-cycle stage, only 3 students (25%) achieved mastery learning with a Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of 70. After the implementation of actions in Cycle I, the number of students who achieved mastery increased to 7 students (58.33%). In Cycle II, learning mastery further increased to 11 students (91.67%). In addition, teacher and student activities in the learning process also improved, indicated by the assessment category changing from “fair” in Cycle I to “good” in Cycle II. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the application of the Structural Analytic Synthetic (SAS) method with picture word card media is effective in improving the early reading skills of first grade students at SD Negeri Sekarputih. This method makes learning more active, interesting, and easier for students to understand, thereby positively influencing their early reading learning outcomes.
