Abstract

Pencak silat functions not only as a martial art but also as a cultural expression that embodies symbolic systems, moral values, and spiritual principles of Indonesian society. One important tradition within the Persaudaraan Setia Hati Winongo (PSHW) martial arts school is the kecer ritual, which serves as a formal initiation ceremony imbued with deep symbolic and philosophical meanings. This study aims to examine the symbolic and philosophical meanings of the kecer ritual as a rite of passage within the PSHW tradition and to explore its relevance to the formation of members’ identity and character. This research employs a qualitative approach within an interpretative paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies related to the implementation of the kecer ritual in PSHW communities in East Java. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive-interpretative method, drawing upon Clifford Geertz’s theory of cultural symbols, Paul Ricoeur’s symbolic hermeneutics, the rite of passage concepts proposed by Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, and perspectives from Javanese philosophy. The findings reveal that the kecer ritual functions as a rite of passage that signifies the transformation of candidates’ social and spiritual status into legitimate and responsible PSHW members. Each ritual stage contains symbols of self-purification, moral discipline, and the internalization of values such as brotherhood, loyalty, discipline, and devotion to God Almighty. Philosophically, the kecer ritual reflects the Javanese worldview that emphasizes balance between the physical and spiritual dimensions of human life. These findings indicate that the kecer ritual plays a strategic role in character formation, the preservation of local wisdom, and has significant potential as a contextual learning resource for Social Studies education and character education.
