Abstract
AGUS SUSILO. 2025. The Use of Spelling Method to Improve Beginning Reading Skills in First Grade Students of SDN Banjaransari 2, Padas District, Ngaw Regency. Elementary School Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, PGRI UNIVERSITY OF MADIUN. Thesis. Undergraduate Program S.1. Supervisors (I) Dr. Endang Sri Maruti, M.Pd., (II) Hartini, S.Sn., M.Pd. Keywords: Spelling Method, Improving early reading skills The reading ability obtained in initial reading will greatly influence the ability to read further. Based on the results of the researcher's observations, the initial reading skills of first-grade students of SDN Banjaransari, Padas District are still low. This low initial reading ability is in the form of students not being able to read the beginning well and correctly, out of 22 students, only 6 students (27%) are able to read the beginning and 18 students (73%) are not able to read the beginning well. The purpose of this study is (1) To determine the process of improving initial reading skills by using the spelling method in first-grade students of SDN Banjaransari 2, Padas District, Ngawi Regency, (2) To determine the increase in initial reading skills in first-grade students of SDN Banjaransari 2 Padas, Ngawi Regency after using the spelling method. The method used in this research is classroom action research (CAR). Data collection techniques in this research are divided into two, namely: (1) Data on the learning process using the spelling method to improve students' initial reading skills are collected using observation techniques, (2) Data on the results of improving initial reading skills are collected using performance test techniques. The analysis technique used by this researcher is interactive analysis. The interactive analysis model has three main components, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions or verification. The results of this study are (1) The process of improving the initial reading ability with the spelling method in grade I students of SDN Banjaransari 2 Padas Ngawi has several obstacles but has been fixed in cycle II. In general, the learning process in improving students' initial reading ability has gone well., (2) The Spelling Method can improve the initial reading ability of grade I students of SDN Banjaransari 2 Padas Ngawi. This improvement in reading ability is seen from the aspects of accuracy in voicing writing, reasonableness of pronunciation, reasonableness of intonation, fluency and clarity of voice.
