Abstract
Children’s activeness in literacy activities is one of the important indicators of the development of language, communication, and learning engagement in early childhood education. However, initial observations at TK Siti Hajar 1 Madiun City showed that most children were still passive in answering questions, expressing opinions, imitating new vocabulary, and responding because learning was still teacher-centered and parental involvement in literacy activities was not yet optimal. This study aimed to improve children’s activeness through the implementation of the Joint Book Borrowing Program with Parents. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis, McTaggart, and Nixon model, conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 15 children of Group B3 at TK Siti Hajar 1 Madiun City in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed that children’s activeness increased from 26% in the pre-cycle to 57% in Cycle I and reached 89% in Cycle II, thereby exceeding the predetermined success indicator. Improvement occurred across all indicators of activeness, namely the ability to answer questions, express opinions, imitate new vocabulary, and respond. These findings indicate that integrating school literacy and family literacy through the Joint Book Borrowing Program with Parents is effective in increasing children’s activeness and can serve as an alternative model for strengthening literacy in early childhood education.
