Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ conceptual understanding and learning activeness in Social Studies through the implementation of the group discussion method. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted with 29 sixth-grade students of SDN 02 Kanigoro, Kartoharjo District, Madiun City. The study was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation sheets to measure students’ learning activeness and tests to assess conceptual understanding. The results showed a significant improvement in both students’ conceptual understanding and learning activeness. The average score of conceptual understanding increased from 60.34 in the pre-cycle to 71.90 in Cycle I and further improved in Cycle II, achieving classical learning mastery. Students’ learning activeness also increased from a low category in the pre-cycle to a good category in Cycle II. These improvements were influenced by active student participation in discussions, effective group collaboration, and the teacher’s role as a learning facilitator. In conclusion, the group discussion method is effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and learning activeness in Social Studies learning.
