Abstract
Indonesian students’ mathematical abilities remain relatively low, as indicated by PISA results that place Indonesia among the lowest rankings globally. This condition highlights the need for more effective learning strategies to support conceptual understanding and improve students’ mathematical skills. This study aims to explore the learning strategies employed by high-achieving students in understanding and mastering mathematics. The research focuses on three types of learning strategies cognitive, metacognitive, and resource management, which are believed to play a crucial role in supporting students’ mathematical abilities. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed. The subject was a seventh-grade student at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Madiun with outstanding achievements in mathematics. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Miles & Huberman’s interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the subject consistently applied various learning strategies consciously and flexibly, adapting to the demands of the material and the learning situation. Cognitive strategies used included repetition, elaboration, and information organization. Metacognitive strategies were evident in planning, monitoring, as well as evaluating and adjusting learning strategies. Meanwhile, resource management strategies encompassed time management, learning environment arrangement, mood regulation, and seeking assistance from various sources. These three types of strategies complemented one another and contributed to the student’s mathematical achievements. The findings provide a concrete picture of effective learning strategies that can serve as a reference for developing instructional approaches better suited to the needs and characteristics of learners.
