Abstract
Politeness phenomena occurred not only in daily conversations but also in movie dialogues. The Day After Tomorrow presented intense crisis communication among its characters, making it a compelling subject for pragmatic analysis. This study aimed to identify the types of politeness strategies and politeness principles expressed by the characters in high-stakes crisis situations, as well as to explain their implications for communication effectiveness. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consisted of selected utterances from the movie, collected through documentation and analyzed using a referential method based on established pragmatic theories. The findings revealed that off-record strategies were the most frequently used, totaling 18 instances, indicating a preference for indirectness during emotional or urgent moments. Additionally, the most dominant maxim found was the tact maxim, appearing eight times. These findings suggested that characters prioritized preserving the hearer’s dignity and minimizing imposition, especially in life-threatening scenarios. The implication highlighted that politeness strategies, particularly indirectness and tact, significantly contributed to communication effectiveness by balancing clarity, urgency, and emotional sensitivity.
