ABSTRACT Sri Rahayuningsih, 2026. Improving Reading Interest and Reading Skills through the Reading Aloud Method among First-Grade Students at SDN Setono 1. Undergraduate Thesis. Madiun. Elementary School Teacher Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisors: (I) Dr. Endang Sri Maruti, S.Pd., M.Pd., and (II) Vivi Rulviana, S.Pd., M.Pd. This study was motivated by the low levels of reading interest and beginning reading skills among first-grade students at SDN Setono 1. The purpose of this study was to improve students’ reading interest and beginning reading skills through the implementation of the reading aloud method. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles. The research subjects consisted of 12 first-grade students at SDN Setono 1, comprising six male students and six female students. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, reading tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The results showed that the implementation of the reading aloud method improved students’ reading interest and beginning reading skills. The percentage of students demonstrating an interest in reading increased from 41.67% in the pre-cycle to 66.67% in Cycle I and reached 91.67% in Cycle II. Students’ beginning reading skills also improved, as indicated by the learning mastery rate, which increased from 41.67% in the pre-cycle to 66.67% in Cycle I and reached 91.67% in Cycle II. Furthermore, the average reading skills score increased from 63.75 in the pre-cycle to 74.58 in Cycle I and 86.25 in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the reading aloud method is effective in improving reading interest and beginning reading skills among first-grade students at SDN Setono 1.
