Abstract
This study aims to explain the rhetorical patterns that appear in the introduction section of research articles written by Indonesian writers. Using a qualitative approach, this research relies on document analysis as its methodological design. The data sources of this study are 20 research articles in the introduction section uploaded in SINTA. The data sources are research articles written by Indonesians in the field of teaching, linguistics, and literature. The analysis focused on applying the CARS (Create a Research Space) theory developed by Swales (2004) to understand the rhetorical structure in the introduction of the articles. The results showed variations in the writing pattern of the introduction among the articles studied. The most dominant steps in the CARS structure found were Step 3 : Occupying the Niche and Step 1 : Outlining the Purpose or Stating the Nature of the Research. Out of the total data analysed, Step 3 includes 48 data points, which reflects 50% of the whole, signifying the importance of the authors in asserting the existence and relevance of their research. Meanwhile, Step 1 came up with 15 data points (19,2%), indicating that writers strive to be clear in articulating the purpose as well as the focus of their research. In addition, other steps such as Step 6 Move 3 : Stating the Value of the Present Research, and Step 7 Move 3 : Indicating the Structure of the Present Research Paper emerged as fewer steps taken, indicating variations in rhetorical approach. This finding indicates that Indonesian writers strive to be transparent about the purpose of the research, as well as highlighting the value and contribution of their study. In conclusion, the rhetorical patterns in the introductions of research articles by Indonesian writers reflect an effort to promote transparency and clarity in conveying the purpose of the research, which is important for improving scientific understanding and communication.
