Abstract

This research aims to explore the use of hedging in the introduction of research articles written by novice writers. Hedging is a linguistic strategy used to express uncertainty or caution, and is especially important in academic writing to maintain humility and avoid excessive claims. This study will analyze how novice writers use hedging in academic contexts, as well as the factors that influence the use of this strategy. The research method used includes text analysis from a number of randomly selected research articles. Researchers chose to analyze 15 research articles taken from proceedings written by students in 2019 who were identified as novice writers as data sources. Hyland's theory (1998) is used as a basis for analyzing the types and purposes of hedging in research articles. This research use desciptive qualitative approach. Data collection used observation and documentation methods. There are two research results in accordance with the research question that has been mentioned. The first is the results of research on the type of hedging in research articles written by novice writers, it was found that there were 368 data. Writer oriented hedges found 97 data, attribute oriented hedges found 148 data, reliability hedges found 108 data and reader oriented hedges found 15 data. The second research result is that the students' use of attribute-oriented hedges reflects their effort to convey claims more slowly and accurately, demonstrating a deep understanding of the research's complexity and the importance of maintaining academic integrity.
