Abstract

This research aims to explain (1) the use of translanguaging as a teacher strategy in writing classroom for the eight-grade at SMPN 1 Maospati and (2) the weaknesses and strengths of the use of translanguaging as a teacher strategy in writing classroom for the eight-grade at SMPN 1 Maospati. The research design is qualitative research. The subject of this research was one of the classes in the eight-grade students of SMPN 1 Maospati. The data were collected by observation, interview, and documentation then validated by methodological triangulation. As a result, the data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman. The results of this research are: (1) the use of translanguaging as a teacher strategy in writing classroom for the eight-grade at SMPN 1 Maospati are the teacher and the students use Indonesian as a dominant language, English is the second, and Javanese as a spontaneous reaction which is found in the teaching and learning process that consist of pre activities, whilst activities, and post activities. (2) The weaknesses and strengths of the use of translanguaging as a teacher strategy in writing classroom for the eight-grade at SMPN 1 Maospati are the mother tongue is mostly used instead of the target language, it requires too much time, and lack in individual study. While the strengths are the translanguaging strategy can be collaborated with other media, the students become more active in teaching and learning process, and the students have strengthened their thinking and writing skills. As a result, translanguaging is appropriate for writing classes.
