Abstract

This study examines the representation of gender in Hanung Bramantyo's film Kartini and its influence on literature teaching in schools. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to reveal the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the film. The primary data were obtained from scenes in the film, analyzed based on feminist theory and gender representation. The findings show that the film Kartini represents subordination, marginalization, and the struggles of women in confronting patriarchal norms during the colonial period. Through the character of Kartini, the film highlights the importance of education and women's freedom as fundamental human rights. In the context of literature teaching, Kartini proves effective as a learning medium to raise students' awareness of gender issues. Its implementation in the classroom can enhance students' understanding of gender inequality and its relevance in social life. This study concludes that integrating gender studies through media such as films can increase students' sensitivity to the values of equality and social justice in literature education.
