Abstract

Students' mathematical understanding in solving root form problems is the main focus in this study. The background of this research is the importance of mathematical comprehension skills in the mathematics teaching and learning process, especially in root form materials that often cause difficulties for students. This study aims to analyze students' mathematical understanding at three cognitive levels, namely translating, interpreting, and extrapolating. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with the research subject consisting of three students who have different levels of cognitive ability (high, medium, low). Data was collected through written tests and in-depth interviews. The results of the study showed that students with high cognitive abilities were able to fulfill the measured cognitive stages, namely being able to restate concepts, represent concepts in various mathematical forms, apply concepts in mathematical calculations, and explain and check the results of their work. Students with intermediate cognitive abilities are able to classify objects and rewrite concepts, but are not thorough in understanding the details of the problem, so the results are not accurate. Students with low gognitive skills are not able to restate concepts or give examples correctly, and are only able to write formulas without understanding the whole problem, so the results of their work are not correct. In conclusion, students' mathematical understanding is greatly influenced by their ability to go through the predetermined cognitive stages. More intensive practice is needed for students with medium and low mathematical understanding, as well as the preparation of more varied and detailed questions by teachers to improve students' mathematical comprehension skills. This study provides recommendations for future researchers to explore other theories in assessing students' mathematical understanding and enriching references in this field.
