Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the effect of capital structure and sales growth on profitability, as well as the ability of asset structure to moderate both effects, in retailing subsector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the 2020-2025 period. This study employs a quantitative approach using secondary data in the form of companies' financial statements and annual reports obtained from the official IDX website and each company's website. From a population of 31 companies, the sample was determined using purposive sampling, yielding 177 observations that met the criteria, of which 141 were analyzed after outlier treatment. Capital structure was measured by the Debt to Equity Ratio (DER), sales growth by the rate of sales growth, profitability by Return on Equity (ROE), and asset structure by the proportion of fixed assets. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression, and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with IBM SPSS Statistics 26, with hypotheses tested at a 5% significance level. The results show that (1) capital structure has a positive and significant effect on profitability, meaning that the greater the proportion of debt used, the higher the profitability generated; (2) sales growth has no significant effect on profitability; (3) asset structure is able to moderate, that is, strengthen, the effect of capital structure on profitability, so that the benefits of using debt become more evident in companies with a large proportion of fixed assets; and (4) asset structure is not able to moderate the effect of sales growth on profitability. These findings support agency theory, in which debt serves as a monitoring mechanism that becomes more effective when supported by adequate fixed assets. Keywords: capital structure, sales growth, profitability, asset structure, retailing
