Abstract

This research is motivated by the low speaking skills of elementary school students in expressing ideas, opinions, and feelings orally. Less varied teaching methods tend to make students passive and lack confidence. Therefore, an active, engaging, and contextual learning method is needed, one of which is the role play method based on local traditions. The objective of this study is to improve students’ speaking skills and to describe the process and outcomes of the improvement through the implementation of the role play method based on local traditions. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 3 Gemaharjo, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data were collected through observation, interviews, speaking tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the implementation of the role play method based on local traditions significantly improves students’ speaking skills. Students become more confident, are able to deliver dialogues with proper intonation and expression, and are more active in participating during the learning process. In addition, students show high enthusiasm as the learning materials are closely related to their local cultural context. In conclusion, the role play method based on local traditions is effective in improving speaking skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Gemaharjo, Kabupaten Trenggalek.
