Abstract
This research is motivated by the low ability of elementary school students in summarizing nonfiction texts, particularly in identifying main ideas and presenting information concisely and clearly. Conventional learning methods make it difficult for students to fully understand texts and summarize important information. Therefore, a creative and engaging learning method is needed, one of which is the use of the mind mapping method assisted by local songs. The objective of this study is to improve students’ nonfiction text summarizing skills and to describe the process and outcomes of using the mind mapping method assisted by local songs. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 1 Mlinjon, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data were collected through observation, interviews, nonfiction text summarizing tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the use of the mind mapping method assisted by local songs significantly improves students’ nonfiction text summarizing skills. Students are better able to identify main ideas, organize summaries systematically, and retain important information through musical rhythm. In addition, students show high enthusiasm as the learning process is engaging and enjoyable. In conclusion, the mind mapping method assisted by local songs is effective in improving nonfiction text summarizing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Mlinjon, Kabupaten Trenggalek.
