Abstract
This research is motivated by the low speaking skills of elementary school students in expressing ideas and opinions orally. Teacher-centered learning limits students’ opportunities to practice speaking. Therefore, an engaging and technology-based learning innovation is needed, one of which is the use of folktale podcasts as an audio medium. The objective of this study is to improve students’ speaking skills and to describe the process and outcomes of the improvement through podcast-based folktale learning. This study employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects were fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 4 Botoputih, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Data were collected through observation, interviews, speaking tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques with the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that podcast-based folktale learning significantly improves students’ speaking skills. Students become more confident, are able to retell stories coherently, and use better intonation and expression. In addition, students show high enthusiasm as the learning media is engaging and easily accessible. In conclusion, podcast-based folktale learning is effective in improving speaking skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 4 Botoputih, Kabupaten Trenggalek.
