Jingga Vicy Putri Wijayanti. 2026. Diction and Figurative Language in Short Stories Written by Eleventh-Grade Students of SMAN 1 Barat Magetan. Undergraduate Thesis. Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dhika Puspitasari, S.Hum., M.A.; (II) Dr. Ermi Adriani Meikayanti, S.Pd., M.Pd. This study aims to (1) describe the diction used in short stories written by eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Barat Magetan and (2) describe the figurative language used in their short stories. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of diction and figurative language found in the students' short stories. The object of the study was the diction and figurative language used in the short stories, while the subjects were the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Barat Magetan. The data were collected through documentation and interviews. The results of the study indicate that (1) the diction used by the eleventh-grade students includes connotative words, denotative words, general words, specific words, and popular words that are adjusted to the story setting, and (2) the dominant types of figurative language found are comparative figures of speech, such as personification and simile, as well as emphatic figures of speech that function to strengthen the narrative of the short stories.
