Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the learning difficulties experienced by fifth-grade students with special needs (ABK) in the category of mental disability (mentally defective) in comprehending reading texts at SDN Pulerejo 03. The background of this study is based on the low reading comprehension ability of students with special needs, as indicated by their difficulties in recognizing word meanings, understanding the content of texts, and drawing conclusions from reading materials. These difficulties are influenced by limitations in intellectual abilities, the lack of appropriate learning strategies, and limited use of supportive instructional media. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The subject of the study was a fifth-grade student with special needs in the category of mental disability at SDN Pulerejo 03. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that students with special needs in the category of mental disability experience several difficulties in comprehending reading texts, including: (1) difficulty recognizing and understanding vocabulary, (2) difficulty understanding simple sentences, (3) difficulty identifying the main ideas of reading texts, and (4) difficulty retelling the content of texts that have been read. The factors contributing to these difficulties include internal factors, such as intellectual limitations and low learning concentration, as well as external factors, such as less varied teaching methods and limited use of engaging instructional media. The efforts that can be undertaken by teachers include implementing more varied teaching methods, providing gradual reading exercises, and utilizing instructional media that are appropriate to the characteristics and learning needs of students with special needs. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that fifth-grade students with special needs in the category of mental disability at SDN Pulerejo 03 experience various difficulties in comprehending reading texts. Therefore, these difficulties require special attention through appropriate, individualized, and sustainable learning strategies. Keywords: Students with Special Needs (ABK), Mental Disability, Learning Difficulties, Reading Comprehension, Reading Texts, Learning Strategies.
