Abstract

Apology is a speech act that plays an important role in maintaining interpersonal relationships. This study aims to identify how sixth-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas PGRI Madiun use apology strategies across different power relations and to examine how power relations influence the social functions of their apology speech acts. This study uses a qualitative approach involving 17 sixth-semester students of the Department of English Education at Universitas PGRI Madiun as participants. This study collects data through Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of six scenarios and structured interviews with 10 participants. The results show that IFID and TOR are the most frequently used strategies, while IC and ASF are the most frequently used social functions. Power relations influence how participants deliver apologies, especially in determining the level of politeness, formality, and responsibility in apologies, although situational factors and interpersonal relationships also affect how participants express apologies. This study concludes that power relations influence apology strategies and social functions, but this influence is not absolute.
