Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of presupposition based on Yule’s (1996) theory and the communicative functions of those presuppositions based on Jakobson’s (1960) theory in the animated film “Up” (2009). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using document content analysis. The data consist of verbal utterances taken from the official dialogues of the film “Up” (2009). The collected data are identified, classified, and interpreted according to Yule’s six types of presupposition and Jakobson’s six communicative functions. By integrating these two theoretical frameworks, this research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of how implicit meaning and communicative purposes interact in animated film dialogue. The findings are expected to contribute to pragmatic studies, particularly presupposition and communicative function analysis, as well as provide useful references for future researchers interested in film discourse and linguistic analysis.
