Abstract

This study aimed to describe the cultural concepts as well as the formal mathematical concepts and structures embedded in the neptu calculation of Javanese traditional marriage in Ketawang Village, Madiun Regency. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling, resulting in four participants consisting of two community elders and two residents of Ketawang Village. Data were collected through observation, semi structured interviews, and documentation. Documentary data were obtained from the Kitab Primbon and the Javanese calendar. Data validity was established through source triangulation, while data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the neptu calculation is still preserved as part of the cultural tradition of the people of Ketawang Village, Dolopo District, Madiun Regency, and is used as a guideline for determining the compatibility of prospective couples before marrige. The neptu calculation in Ketawang Village generally uses the number three as a divisor, which one informant interpreted philosophically and spiritually by associating it with Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, and Innalillah. The use of this divisor differs from the rules presented in the Kitab Primbon, which use the numbers 4, 5, 7, or 10 as divisors. Furthermore, the study identified formal mathematical concepts and structures consisting of number cocepts, including natural numbers, number representation, and the Least Common Multiple (LCM), arithmetic operations, including the closure, commutative properties of addition, modular arithmetic, and set theory encompassing relations and functions.
